Who makes 800 v dc architecture & solid-state transformers for AI data centers

800 V DC architecture & solid-state transformers (Rubin / Kyber era)

An emerging DC power distribution architecture, using 800 V DC in place of the AC busbar and power-shelf approach current racks use, paired with solid-state transformers (SSTs) that could replace multiple stages of conventional AC transformation.

Conventional data center power distribution converts AC to DC repeatedly — at the UPS (7.10), again at the rack power shelf, and again inside the server — with efficiency lost at each stage. An 800 V DC architecture pushes that conversion further upstream, distributing DC power at higher voltage closer to the rack so fewer conversion stages sit between the grid and the chip, an approach discussed for the rack generations that follow current designs. Solid-state transformers (SSTs) are the enabling technology on the AC side of that architecture: a power-electronics-based transformer that can do voltage conversion and, in some designs, AC-DC conversion in one stage, rather than the separate magnetic transformer and rectifier stages a conventional design uses. Both technologies depend heavily on the same power semiconductor suppliers already central to UPS (7.10a) and power shelves — silicon carbide and gallium nitride devices in particular — so the supply chain for this next architecture overlaps substantially with equipment already being built today rather than requiring an entirely new supplier base. For investors, this is an early-stage, pre-volume category: the signal to watch is which vendors get their 800 V DC and SST designs into reference architectures for the next generation of racks, since that qualification, more than any near-term revenue, is what will determine their position in the eventual transition.

AI delta: Rack power draw is approaching levels where converting AC to DC multiple times between the grid and the chip becomes a meaningful efficiency and space loss, which is the design pressure pushing 800 V DC distribution and solid-state transformers onto the roadmap for the generations after current designs.
