Who makes SF6-free for AI data centers

SF6 does two jobs in switchgear at once: it insulates live parts well enough to shrink the enclosure, and it quenches the arc when a breaker opens under load. Nothing else does both as well, which is why it stayed standard for decades despite being among the most potent greenhouse gases in industrial use. This part covers the equipment built to do those jobs without it. The replacements fall into two families. Fluoronitrile and fluoroketone blends carried in a buffer gas keep more of SF6's compactness but bring their own handling and liquefaction- temperature constraints. Clean-air and vacuum designs use no fluorinated gas at all, sidestepping the chemistry entirely at the cost of a larger footprint as voltage rises. The gas itself is catalogued separately in Layer 10; this part is the switchgear built around it. For an AI campus this lands on the electrical room and the substation, and it is ordered years ahead of first power. Whether it is ordered SF6-free depends on where it is installed — European F-gas rules set phase-down dates for new equipment and several US states and utilities have their own restrictions — and on whether the operator wants the reported emissions off its books. What to look for is which alternative a vendor has qualified at which voltage class, whether it is available in the frame sizes a site needs, and what it does to the delivery date.
