Generators take over once a UPS's ride-through window (7.10, 7.11) runs out, providing power for as long as fuel supply allows, and are sized and paralleled (7.14) to match a facility's full backed-up load. Day tanks and larger fuel storage and delivery systems keep enough fuel on site and moving to the engines to sustain an extended outage, and aftertreatment systems reduce the emissions from running large diesel or gas engines, which matters for permitting in many jurisdictions. Hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), a renewable diesel substitute, is increasingly specified as a way to reduce a generator fleet's emissions profile without changing the engines themselves, though it depends on a separate renewable-fuel supply chain reaching the site reliably. Because a large campus's genset fleet can rival the output of a mid-size power plant, and because the same large-bore engine manufacturing base also serves marine, rail, and industrial customers, a wave of concentrated data center orders can lengthen lead times across all of those markets at once. Rental fleets provide a way to bridge capacity gaps or cover maintenance windows without owning excess generator capacity outright. For investors, watch order backlogs at large-engine manufacturers, permitting timelines for emissions in the jurisdictions campuses are sited in, and how much HVO supply is being contracted ahead of need.
