Who makes HVO for AI data centers

Hydrotreated vegetable oil is a renewable diesel made by hydrogenating fats and oils into a hydrocarbon that is chemically close to conventional diesel — which is the point. Unlike biodiesel, it is a drop-in fuel: existing engines run on it without modification, and it can be blended in any proportion with fossil diesel, so a site can switch without touching the generators it already owns. The attraction for a data center operator is emissions accounting on an asset that is otherwise hard to decarbonise. Backup generators run rarely but they are a visible fossil- fuel commitment on a campus that has usually made public commitments elsewhere, and HVO changes the reported footprint of those run hours without a capital project. It also has better cold-weather and storage-stability behaviour than biodiesel, which matters for a fuel that sits in a tank for years between uses. The honest limits are supply and cost. HVO production capacity is finite and contested by road transport and aviation, feedstock availability is the binding constraint rather than plant capacity, and it prices above conventional diesel. What to look for is whether a site has an actual supply contract or only an engine approval, what the feedstock is and how it is certified, and whether the engine maker's warranty covers the blend being used at the hours the site intends to run.
