Who makes water and wastewater for AI data centers

Water reaches a data center through the same municipal infrastructure as anything else, and leaves through the same sewers — and the quantities involved have made this the most politically exposed utility on the list. Evaporative cooling consumes water, and a large campus can be a significant user in the community that hosts it, which is why water has become a live permitting and public-relations issue in several data center regions. The engineering response has been to move away from evaporative cooling where the climate allows, using dry or hybrid heat rejection and accepting higher power consumption in exchange for lower water use. That is a genuine trade rather than an improvement: water and energy are substitutes in heat rejection, and reducing one raises the other. Liquid cooling shifts the picture again by allowing higher rejection temperatures, which makes dry cooling viable in more places. Wastewater is the less discussed half. Cooling systems discharge blowdown carrying concentrated minerals and treatment chemicals, and that has to be permitted and accepted by the local system. What to look for is whether a site is evaporative, dry or hybrid, the water source and whether it is potable, and the discharge permit — a campus whose cooling design assumes a discharge volume the local system will not accept has a problem that cannot be solved with equipment.
