Who makes STATCOM and synchronous condensers for AI data centers

Large loads and inverter-based generation both make grid voltage harder to hold. Reactive power support is the answer, and this part covers the two main ways of providing it. A STATCOM is power electronics: fast, precise, no moving parts. A synchronous condenser is a spinning machine — a generator with nothing driving it — that provides reactive power and, crucially, real physical inertia and short-circuit strength that electronics do not. That distinction has become the live question on modern grids. As synchronous generation retires, systems lose the inertia that used to ride through disturbances, and utilities have started installing condensers specifically to put some back. Some installations pair the two, using a STATCOM for speed and a condenser for inertia. An AI campus is directly implicated because it is a very large load connecting at a point that may not have been designed for it. The interconnection study frequently identifies a voltage-support requirement, and the equipment either gets built by the utility and charged to the project, or built by the project itself on its own side of the meter. What to look for is whether a campus's interconnection agreement includes reactive support obligations, which technology the utility requires, and lead time — these are heavy electrical machines from the same manufacturers whose transformer and switchgear order books are already extended.
