A plate heat exchanger transfers heat between two water loops without letting them mix. Corrugated plates stack with alternating channels, one loop on each side, and the design gets a large surface area into a small volume — which is why this is how the facility loop and the technology loop meet in almost every liquid-cooled deployment. Keeping the loops separate is the entire point. The facility loop is building water: treated, but shared with equipment across the site and subject to whatever the plant does. The technology loop runs through cold plates with narrow channels and touches the accelerators. Letting one into the other would put the site's water chemistry, its particulate, and its pressure transients into the hardware. The exchanger also decouples pressure, so a fault on the facility side cannot overpressure the delicate side. Exchangers come gasketed, which can be opened and cleaned, or brazed, which cannot but has no gasket to fail. The choice is a maintenance philosophy. What to look for is the approach temperature — how close the two loops get, which directly sets how warm the facility loop must run and therefore how much free cooling the site can use — and whether the unit is bought standalone or inside a CDU, since the same component appears in both places in this catalog.
