Layer 10 — Materials & upstream inputs
Position in the die→grid hierarchy: outside the fence.
Raw materials several steps upstream that AI demand still moves: copper, aluminum, electrical steel for transformer cores, rare-earth magnets, specialty glass, refrigerants, industrial gases, and export-control-sensitive critical minerals.
This layer is the raw-material base every other layer draws from: copper, aluminum, electrical steel, rare-earth magnets, glass and glass fiber, refrigerants and insulating gases, industrial gases, and a handful of minor but essential elements (gallium, germanium, indium, tungsten, beryllium). None of it is data-center-specific — these are commodity and specialty materials also consumed by autos, grid buildout, consumer electronics, and general industry — so data-center demand is a claim on existing global supply rather than a dedicated pipeline. It feeds forward into nearly every layer above it: copper and aluminum become busbars, cable, cold plates and transformer windings (Layers 4, 5, 6, 7); electrical steel becomes the cores inside power and distribution transformers (Layer 6); rare-earth magnets become the motors inside fans, pumps and gensets (Layers 4, 5, 7); glass and glass fiber become optical fiber and the T-glass and glass-core substrates under chip packages (Layers 1, 3); refrigerants and insulating gases serve cooling equipment and switchgear (Layers 5, 6); and critical minerals like gallium and germanium sit inside power semiconductors and optics (Layer 1). The investable choke points sit upstream of the data-center industry itself: mining and refining capacity, smelter and mill lead times, and — for grain-oriented electrical steel and the critical-minerals group in particular — a small number of qualified producers and geographically concentrated, sometimes export-controlled, supply.
