Who makes gases for AI data centers

A fab runs on gas. Bulk nitrogen, oxygen, argon and hydrogen are piped in continuously for purging, inerting and carrier flows, while the specialty gases — the etchants, dopants and deposition precursors — arrive in cylinders at purity levels where the packaging is part of the product. Consumption is tied to running the plant rather than to output, which is why gas supply is contracted over long horizons and often supplied on-site. That on-site model is the thing to understand about this part. For a large fab the bulk gas supplier builds and operates an air separation plant at the fenceline under a long- term contract, so the relationship looks more like a utility than a purchase order. The specialty side is the opposite: small volumes, high value, qualified per process step, and with a handful of molecules where global production sits in very few places. AI reaches this part through wafer starts and through the fab construction wave itself — a new fab is a new gas plant. It also touches Layer 10, where the same industrial gas majors appear again, and Layer 6, where some of the same chemistry shows up in fire suppression. What to look for is the split between bulk contracts, which are steady and utility-like, and the specialty molecules, where a single-source constraint has interrupted supply before.
