An advanced conductor carries more current than the conventional steel-cored aluminium cable it replaces, on the same towers. It does this by using a composite core instead of steel — lighter and with far less thermal expansion, so the line sags less as it heats and can therefore be run hotter — or by using annealed aluminium that conducts better in the same cross-section. The reason this matters is that reconductoring an existing line avoids the two things that make new transmission slow: acquiring right-of-way and obtaining permits for a new corridor. Replacing the wire on structures that already exist can roughly double a line's capacity on a timeline measured in months rather than years, which is a different proposition from building a new circuit. Some structures need reinforcement, so it is not free, but it is far short of a new line. For a grid absorbing AI-scale load growth, this is one of the few genuinely fast levers, and it sits alongside grid-enhancing technology as the alternative to waiting for new corridors. What to look for is whether a utility has a reconductoring programme at all, since adoption has been slower than the engineering case suggests, and the supply base — the composite core is the specialised part and comes from few sources, while the stranding is done by the established cable makers who also appear on HVDC in this same part.
