# Paralleling switchgear & generator controls

Part ID: 7.14 · Layer 7 (Electrical: power distribution (grid to rack))

Switchgear and control systems that synchronize and combine the output of multiple generators so they can operate as one larger backed-up power source, and manage the transition between utility, UPS, and generator power.

A single generator (7.13) can only supply so much power, so facilities needing more back it up with multiple units run in parallel, synchronized so their combined output behaves as one source rather than several independent ones. Paralleling switchgear does the electrical synchronization, matching frequency and phase before connecting generators together and to the facility load; generator controls handle the sequencing — starting units in the right order, load-sharing between them once running, and shedding non-critical load if capacity is tight. This layer also manages the broader transition logic between utility, UPS, and generator power alongside the transfer switches in 7.07, since a facility moving through an outage has to hand load between sources without an interruption downstream equipment would notice. As campuses scale from a handful of generators to fleets large enough to approach a power plant's output, the paralleling and controls problem becomes proportionally harder — more units to synchronize, more failure modes to plan for, and tighter coordination with the utility interconnection itself. For investors, this is a smaller, more specialized supplier base than generators themselves, and the relevant signal is how well a given controls vendor's systems have been proven at the fleet sizes gw_class campuses are now ordering.

**AI delta:** A gw_class campus's generator fleet can require far more paralleled units than a conventional building, making synchronization and load-sharing controls a proportionally harder engineering problem.
