"summary": "Rigid, modular busbar systems that carry power along a data hall's overhead or perimeter path with tap-off points, used as an alternative to running individual cables to each row.",
"description_md": "Busway carries current from LV switchgear or PDUs (7.05, 7.07) along a data hall, typically overhead, with tap-off boxes at intervals that feed individual racks or rows — functionally similar to what LV cable and tray (7.09) do, but as a rigid, pre-engineered, higher-ampacity alternative. Its appeal in a data center is flexibility: adding or moving a tap-off is simpler than pulling new cable, which matters as rack power draw and layouts change between generations of IT equipment. As racks draw more current, busway systems are being specified at higher ampacity ratings and with more tap-off density than in a conventional commercial building, and some designs are extending busway architecture down into the rack itself as a power-distribution backbone. Because busway is a metal-intensive, factory-fabricated product shipped in fixed lengths and site-jointed, manufacturing capacity and copper or aluminum input costs both matter to how quickly it can be delivered at scale. For investors, watch order backlogs at busway manufacturers, the pace at which they are qualifying higher-ampacity product lines for AI-density racks, and the extent to which busway is displacing cable and tray as the default in-hall distribution method rather than remaining a premium option.",
"ai_delta": "Higher rack power draw favors busway over cable runs because busway supports higher-ampacity tap-offs and is easier to reconfigure as rack layouts and power densities change between generations.",
